Writing About Music:
with Kathy Curto
Live Online Class:
Saturday, October 22, 2022
Time: 10am-1pm EST (3 hours)
“People tend to think about essays about music as limited to our interest in music. But much like books, music is a way we escape, and the songs and artists that speak to us stay with us forever. Recently, I’ve been reading more essays about just how these shows, these albums, reflect our culture and lives. I’ve found that there are so many writers combining love of music with love of literature with political and personal essays—genres are blending more and more in the world of essays, and it’s for the better.” -Leah Rachel von Essen in Book Riot, July 2018
The goal of this 1-day class is to reflect on the music that matters to you and to honor those reflections within your writing. Writers of all levels and genres are welcome.
The feelings and thoughts triggered by music allow us to communicate, connect, and transform. Everyone has some type of relationship with music. It is always there in the background of life as we choose our music to dance, study, and workout. It is also therre when we share joyous or sad occasions.
Through our personal reflections on music, we will look at how how it enriches our lives. Maybe your story is about the instrument you play (or fantasize about playing) or the song that transports you back to a specific place or time. Perhaps, you will write about your memory of the first concert you attended, the first time you understood how music can be a form of protest, or how it can soothe a broken heart.
Whatever your special relationship with music, this class explores the way music shapes some of the most unforgettable slices of our lives.
Join us for a day of generative writing, sharing, and discussion. Writers of all levels and genres are welcome.
Limited to ten students.
